Description
William Meuttman was a late 19th century, early 20th century, tonalist Artist who specialized in Native American subject matter. This painting depicts a Native American and his Wife. The man is paying homage the Sun Gods. Meuttman was from Cincinnatti, Ohio, and traveled extensively, west, to render paintings of Sioux and other southwestern Tribes. A strip of canvas affixed to the stretcher, most probably by the Artist, has written Sandia, New Mexico The Vow to the Sun Gods. Sight area of painting measures 16″ x 15″. Framed it is 22″ x 21″. Signed lower right, W. Meuttmann.
