Description
One of Eric Sloane’s quintessential masterpieces depicting his passion for early 20th Century Americana. This painting is illustrated on page 33 of his book titled, "Return to Tao, s Eric Sloane’s Sketchbook of Roadside Americana." A covered bridge replete with a myriad of local advertising. At the opposite entrance of the covered bridge, a Model T truck is about to cross the bridge. The largest ad, "Smoke or Chew Mail Man Tobacco" along with a hanging sign "Walk your Horse, " and other advertisements such as "General Garage" "Lyceum" and graffiti in the form of a heart, Hi, and someones initials. Mail Man tobacco was the colloquial name for "Mail Pouch" tobacco, which is still made today. In the 60’s, approximately 20,000 barns donned the "Chew Mail Pouch Tobacco" advertisement. Most of those barns were in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
The book was published in 1960, so this painting would pre-date the publication of the book and believed to have been painted in the 50’s, or possibly earlier. The painting is only 1 of 2 full page color illustrations in the book, which shows how much Eric Sloane thought of this piece of work. And to contemplate that Sloane painted all his subject matter from memory, highlights his exceptional talent.
